Workshop - Planned Giving

Planned Giving - with Bill Zook

When: Wednesday, November 20, 2024; 9am - 1pm

Where: SCAF

Who should attend: Nonprofit Leaders

Workshop participants will first be oriented to what planned giving is, as well as what it isn’t, along with how it relates to other types of support an organization might receive. We will then learn about the different types of planned gifts, with an emphasis on those that are relatively common and – happily – relatively simple and straightforward.

The balance of our time together will be devoted to considering what sorts of activities an organization will want to pursue as it seeks, accepts, and makes use of planned gifts. Participants will be provided with sample documents, summaries, and other resources, plus there will be ample time for questions and discussion.

Bill is the principal of Evergreen Planned Giving, LLC, which was formed in 2016. Well into his third decade as a planned giving consultant, he has served hundreds of clients (primarily charitable organizations, but also donors, their professional advisors, and financial institutions that administer planned gifts) throughout the U.S. In addition, he is involved with the management of a private grant making foundation and a related private operating foundation. Bill worked initially with Planned Giving Services, Inc. and its founder, Frank Minton, beginning in 1996 and then with planned giving software and services company PG Calc Incorporated from 2005 to 2015.

A former president of the Washington Planned Giving Council, Bill is also a member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (as well as its Leadership Institute), the American Council on Gift Annuities, the Seattle Estate Planning Council, and the Washington State Bar Association. Prior to becoming a consultant, Bill practiced estate planning law and spent the better part of a decade in the field of alternative dispute resolution entailing arbitration, mediation, and conciliation of customer-business disputes; arbitration of labor-management disputes; and teaching a community college course for paralegals. He received his B.A. in religious studies from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law.
